Project Connected  

The volunteers were split into 4 groups to teach the local children between 5 to 10 years old at Athiliwawe School. The teaching contents included importance of hand hygiene, food pyramid and good nutrition. This is to raise their awareness regarding issues of poor hygiene and malnutrition.

 

Besides, the volunteers put in a lot of effort to practice cultural dance beforehand. Their cultural show received good response from the locals. They also got to lend a hand by helping army with the construction work.

The volunteers were also trained and briefed by Dr Ajith on 31st July in order to carry out mobile medical screening for the locals. The screening services provided on 1st August included eye screening, blood pressure measurement, diabetes screening, limb fixing etc. The screening is able to monitor the health of the locals and immediate actions can be taken if serious health issues are detected.

During leisure time, the volunteers had the chance to visit archeological site and lakes. The activities on both days ended successfully and the volunteers were preparing for the events for next few days.

On 2nd August, the volunteers went to Balaharuwa School and they were warmly welcomed by the people over there. They performed cultural dance before splitting into groups. 2 groups of volunteers stayed in school while the other 2 groups carried out mobile medical screening for the locals.

At Balaharuwa School, the volunteers helped army with construction work, taught the kids about importance of hand hygiene and good nutrition. The volunteers and the children fostered close relationship among each other through the activities. In the evening, the volunteers had the chance to visit Dematamal Vihara (Buddhist temple) at Okkampitiya.

On the next day (3rd August), all of the volunteers carried out the mobile medical screening together. Besides, they went to Wallawaya for the function, distribution of artificial limbs and books provided by Rotary Club.

 

During their leisure time, they went sightseeing at Yudaganawa stupa. The 2 days were filled with joys and laughters!

For the last few days in Sri Lanka, the volunteers grabbed the opportunity to visit tea factory at Mackwoods, Ramboda Falls and even went for a hike. They had the chance to explore around Kandy city.

 

Besides, they were able to visit elephant farm. They also went for shopping and had fun at beach near Galle Face and Mount Lavinia area. On 6th August, they had the chance to visit and had dinner at Sri Lankadhara Balika Home (an orphanage).

On 7th August, the volunteers departed from Colombo Airport back to Kuala Lumpur. The trip was not only meaningful but also extremely joyful. The volunteers gained a lot of memorable experiences throughout the trip and they had fostered close relationships among each other.
